Daemen Tracksters Fare Well At ROC City Classic

Jemmison, Roginson, Laird Set New Team Benchmarks

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Sprinter Niko Jemmison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation), long distance runner Kevin Roginson (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and field events specialist Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) all set new team record to pace the Daemen College men's outdoor track and field team yesterday at the ROC City Classic hosted by Nazareth College at Golden Flyer Stadium.

Jemmison finished fifth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.28 seconds, eclipsing the previous record of 11.31 seconds set by Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) at last season's East Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Roginson's record-setting performance came in the 5000 meter run where he finished seventh with a time of 15:46.50.  Roginson's time was 10 seconds better than the previous mark (15:56.87) set by his teammate, Jeremy Rushok (Akron, N.Y./Buffalo State College), at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Daemen's 2015 season opener.  Rushok finished 18th in the event yesterday, coming in with a time of 16:22.00.

The Wildcats' javelin record fell for the second straight meet as Laird's toss of 42.01 meters bested that of teammate Jonathan Dygert (Springville, N.Y./Springville-Griffith) who set a new mark at 39.24 meters just 10 days prior at the Alfred State Invitational.  Laird's throw was good for seventh place, and he added a 15th place finish in the shot put (11.44 meters) and a ninth place finish in the long jump (5.88 meters).

Junior mid-distance runner Matt VanDeMortel (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) had his second straight strong meet as well, finishing 12th in the 800 meter run.  VanDeMortel was one of 15 runners to complete the race in under two minutes, crossing the finish line in 1:59.03.  Classmate Nigel Cordulla (Cheektowaga, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) finished 16th in the event, coming in just over the two-minute mark (2:00.21).

Freshman Jake Pronti (Pendleton, N.Y./Starpoint) finished fifth out of nine competitors in the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:29.32).

The meet was not scored for team standings.

Daemen returns to action this Saturday, April 16 at the Westminster Invitational.
