ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's track and field team closed out its 2015-16 season today by taking part in the Cardinal Last Chance Meet hosted by St. John Fisher College.
Highlights of the day included a school-record setting time by junior Jeremy Rushok (Akron, N.Y./Buffalo State College) in the 10,000-meter run and a first-place showing by classmate Niko Jemmison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation) in the 200-meter dash.
Rushok posted a time of 32:55.47 in the 10,000 meters, eclipsing the previous record of 33:14.71 set by Brett Smith at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational in 2012. Jemmison placed first out of 10 sprinters in the 200 meters with a time of 23.03—narrowly missing the school-record time of 22.90 set by Sam Rugg at the 2013 ROC City Classic.
Juniors Matt VanDeMortel (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) and Nigel Cordulla (Cheektowaga, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) both turned in solid efforts in the 800-meter run, as VanDeMortel placed sixth with a time of 1:58.53 and Cordulla finished ninth with a time of 1:59.13.
Additional highlights of the track events included top-five finishes by sophomore Kevin Roginson (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and freshman Dom Russo (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown). Roginson placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run (16:00.74), while Russo finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:20.86). Freshman Lucas Canales (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) also turned in an 11th-place showing in the 1,500-meter run (4:22.51).
Sophomore Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) nearly broke his own school-record en route to a fourth-place showing in the javelin. His throw of 46.70 meters was just shy of the school-record (46.72) he set at the the East Coast Conference Championships last month. Freshman Andrew Strobele (Akron, N.Y./Akron) competed in the shot put and posted a toss of 8.46.
