VanDeMortel Claims New School Record At Cornell

Wildcat Men Compete At Robert J. Kane Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Daemen College men's indoor track and field team competed in the Robert J. Kane Invitational today, marking the second straight season they've gone to the event held at Barton Hall on the campus of Ivy League member Cornell University.

Veteran Matt VanDeMortel (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) continues to be a top contender for the Wildcats.  Today, the middle-distance standout, eclipsed his own record in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth out of 23 participants.  VanDeMortel established a new team record in this event at the Brockport Golden Eagle Multi and Invitational on January 28 with a time of 1:57.56; today he set a new record, crossing the finish line in 1:56.98.  The senior star also holds the Wildcats' record in the 600-meter run which he set earlier this year.

Jonny Schmidt (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) was another headliner for Daemen today, placing fifth in the 600-meter run.  The sophomore sprinter bumped up in distance today, finishing the race in 1:29.01, just three-seconds shy of the school record.

First-year student Tyler Compo (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) and senior Nigel Cordulla (Cheektowaga, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) added top-20 finishes for Daemen at today's meet.  Compo finished 11th out of 29 entrants in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.66 seconds.  Cordulla placed 14th in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 2:04.16.

Additional highlights from the track include Daemen's performance in the 200-meter dash.  Drew Greenaway (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation) and Compo both placed in the top-30, finishing 21st and 29th respectively.  Greenaway ran the race in 24.44 seconds, while Compo came in with a time of 24.92 seconds.

In field events, Daemen saw strong performances in the long jump by Zack Laird (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) and Tanner Speer (Gasport, N.Y./Grand Island).  Laird placed 15th with a leap of 5.89 meters, while Speer finished 18th with a jump of 5.67 meters.

Daemen returns to action next Saturday, February 18, when they return to Brockport to compete in the Golden Eagle Invitational.  Next weekend's meet marks the last outing before the Wildcats head to Staten Island to take part in the East Coast Conference Championships.
