Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season With Two-Match Homestand

THE SERVE
The Daemen College men's tennis team hosts a pair of East Coast Conference matches this weekend to close out their 2016-17 regular season...the Wildcats need wins in both matches to keep their hopes for an ECC Tournament berth alive...both matches are slated for the Ellicott Tennis Courts, Daemen's home venue for outdoor matches, on the campus of the University at Buffalo.

ON THE SIDELINES
Stephen Beatty enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wildcats...over the course of his first three seasons, Beatty has guided the Daemen men's tennis team to a 19-49 record...a former collegiate player at Division II Northwood University (Mich.) and Division III D'Youville College, Beatty got his coaching start as an assistant to Kelly Brown, serving for one season - Daemen's inaugural season of tennis competition - before being promoted to the top post.
   
DAEMEN GROUND STROKES (6-16, 0-3 ECC)
Daemen has rebounded from a slow start to win four of its last nine dual matches, two of which have come by shutout...with six wins this season, the Wildcats have surpassed their win total from all of the 2015-16 season when they went 5-17 overall, and moved within one win of tying the team record for wins in a season...the recent stretch of solid play began with a 9-0 shutout victory over Millersville on Mar. 5...in the win, senior John LeMar picked up the 31st doubles win of his career to become the program's all-time leader...freshman Fabian Wilde won in both singles and doubles against Millersville, and was subsequently named the ECC Rookie of the Week for matches played Feb. 27 through Mar. 5...the Wildcats followed up with back-to-back wins over Franklin (9-0) and Earlham (5-4)...after falling to ECC-favorite NYIT on April 1, the Wildcats earned a 7-2 non-league win at Caldwell on April 2...the Wildcats are coming off a 6-3 loss to Roberts Wesleyan...in a March loss to District of Columbia, junior Mark Veitengruber earned the 33rd singles win of his career, breaking the program record set by Gregory Lowe from 2012-16...Veitengruber, who set the program record for singles in in a season last year with 13, is tied with Wilde for second on the team lead in singles wins this season with nine...leading the way with 10 singles wins is sophomore Ricardo Ruiz Martinez...he has come on strong  in the last several weeks, and he'll enter this weekend's contest having won five-straight singles matches...in doubles play, Ruiz Martinez has teamed with classmate David Gonzalez Villegas to go 8-6...individually, Gonzalez Villegas leads the team with 12 doubles wins, breaking the program record for doubles wins in a season...the Wildcats were picked sixth in the ECC preseason poll.
   
QUEENS GROUND STROKES (10-5, 3-0 ECC)
Queens is led by third-year head coach Somadi Druker who has guided the Knights to a 37-19 record in her tenure to date...Druker, who has led QC to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths in her first two seasons, is a two-time ECC Coach of the Year... among the Knights' returners this season are a pair of first-team All-ECC picks from last season - senior Sharvil Nawghre and junior Gabriel Mendez...also back is second-team All-ECC pick Roman Laga and ECC Rookie of the Year Camilo Arias...after going 14-8 last season, including a 4-1 mark in conference play, the Knights were picked second in the ECC preseason poll...QC heads into Friday's match with Daemen as winners of two-straight matches, and six of their last seven....their only loss of late was a 5-2 setback at Division I Stony Brook earlier this month...an 8-1 defeat of league-favorite NYIT on April 5 snapped the Bears' 29-match ECC winning streak...QC enters Friday's match as the No. 1 team in the latest NCAA Division II East Region rankings.

St. Thomas Aquinas is led by head coach Matthew Capell...the Spartans are coming off an 11-14 campaign last season which saw them go 1-4 in ECC play...returners Andreu Ferragut-Lluch and Aaron Stahl, now juniors, both earned second-team All-ECC honors last season...the Spartans were picked fifth in the ECC preseason poll...STAC has rebounded from a three-match slide to win two-straight matches - a 9-0 shutout of West Chester and a tight 5-4 defeat of Le Moyne...STAC plays Friday at Roberts Wesleyan before heading to Daemen the following day.
