Daemen Tracksters Fare Well In Season Opener

GENESEO, N.Y. – Long distance runner Kevin Roginson (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) and field event specialist Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) each set new team records to pace the Daemen College men's outdoor track and field team today at the Geneseo Early Spring Invitational hosted by SUNY Geneseo.

Roginson's record-setting performance came in the 5,000 meter run where he finished third with a time of 15:23.41.  Roginson's time was 23 seconds better than his previous mark of 15:46.50, which he set at the Roc City Classic last season.  Lucas Canales (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) added a top-20 finish alongside Roginson, placing 12th with a time of 16:11.19.

Laird finished second in the javelin throw out of a field of 37 competitors with a heave of 49.10 meters, eclipsing his previous record of 46.72 meters.  The junior thrower also added a 16th place finish in the shot put with a throw of 12.24 meters.

Senior sprinter Niko Jemmison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation) placed sixth out of 55 entrants in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.55 seconds.  In the 200-meter dash, Justin Petrocy (Elma, N.Y./University at Buffalo) finished 18th (23.85 seconds), while teammate Andrew Greenway (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation) placed 25th (24.28 seconds).

Additional highlights from the track include Matt VanDeMortel's sixth place finish in the 800-meter run.  The senior standout continues to be a strong contender for the Wildcats, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:59.82.  In the 400-meter dash Jonny Schmidt (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) and Petrocy finished 13th (52.89 sec.) and 14th (53.15 sec.) respectively.

The Wildcats are back in action at this weekend's Roc City Classic, hosted by Nazareth College on Saturday, April 8th
