ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's track and field team closed out its 2017 outdoor season here today by taking part in the Cardinal Last Chance Meet hosted by St. John Fisher College.
Seniors Niko Jemmison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation) and Matt VanDeMortel (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) made the most of their final meet during the track events. Jemmison placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.40, while VanDeMortel placed fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 1.58:01.
Daemen's relay teams also fared well. The 4x100 relay team of Jemmison, Reid, sophomore Drew Greenaway (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation) and freshman Tyler Compo (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) ran unopposed and posted a time of 44.46—narrowly missing the school-record of 43.80 set in 2014. The 4x400 team of Compo, VanDeMortel, senior Nigel Cordulla (Cheektowaga, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and freshman Laban Korir (Bomet, Kenya) placed third with a time of 3:33.62—just six seconds shy of the school-record set two years ago.
Senior Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), freshman Sullivan Keller (Alden, N.Y./Alden) and junior Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) paced the Wildcats during the field events. Reid broke his own school-record and placed third in the long jump with a leap of 6.55 meters. He set the previous record (6.44) during the 2015 ROC City Classic. Keller, who competed in four events today, placed third in the discus with a school-record throw of 42.28. He broke the previous standard of 38.80 set by Mark Fox in 2012. Laird registered his eighth top-five finish of the season. The school-record holder in the javelin, Laird placed first in the event today with a long throw of 48.17 meters.
