BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Daemen College men's indoor track and field team participated in the Brockport Golden Eagle Multi and Invitational hosted by The College at Brockport today. Daemen finished 10th out of 14 competing teams with 30 points.
Host Brockport claimed the team title with a score of 203, while Canisius College (72), Rochester Institute of Technology (70.5), the University of Rochester (64.5) and SUNY Fredonia (44.5) rounded out the top-five.
Freshmen Alonzo Rodriguez-Spencer (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Rodney Corbin (Williamsville, N.Y.) accounted for 20 of Daemen's 30 points, as they both claimed individual titles.
Rodriguez-Spencer placed first out of 17 runners in the 500 meters with a school-record time of 1:07.55. He edged out senior Erik Diehl (1:07.76) of Alfred University, sophomore Marcus Brown (1:07.85) of Canisius and senior Seth Spicer (1:07.90) of Alfred for the individual title. His time topped the previous school-record of 1:09.05 set by current teammate Tyler Compo (Lancaster, N.Y.) at last year's East Coast Conference Championships.
Corbin placed first in the 60-meter dash for the second straight week, as he placed first out of six runners with a time of 7.06. He edged out fellow rookie Olivier Kothor (7.11) of Brockport for the title. His collegiate debut was a memorable one last week, as he set the school-record of 7.01 at the Highlander Invitational hosted by Houghton College. Corbin also placed 12th out of 57 runners in the 200 meters today with a time of 23.91.
Additional highlights this afternoon included school-record efforts by senior Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y.) and the distance medley team of Rodriguez-Spencer, junior Lucas Canales (Ithaca, N.Y.), redshirt freshman Nate Louk (Jane Lew, W. Va.) and sophomore Josh Bodnar (Fillmore, N.Y.). Laird tied the school-record in the high jump (1.73), while the distance relay team placed fifth out of eight teams with a time of 10:53.1—topping the old mark of 11:04.39 set at the Highlander Invitational last January.
Redshirt senior Justin Petrocy (Elma, N.Y.) and Compo turned in solid efforts in the 400 meters, as Petrocy placed 10th out of 32 with a time of 54.56 and Compo was 12th with a time of 54.63. Louk placed 13th in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:43.20, while Canalas finished 12th out of 46 runners in the mile with a time of 4:39.16. The 3,000-meter run featured a 12th-place showing by sophomore Cale Silvestri (Elma, N.Y.), while freshman Michael Swiniarski (Akron, N.Y.) finished 15th in the same event,
In field events, Sullivan Keller (Alden, N.Y.) competed in the shot put and weight throw and finished 11th (12.65) and 21st (11.94) respectively. Senior Shaquille Corrica (New York City, N.Y.) placed 11th out of 31 in the long jump with a leap of 6.12 meters.
Daemen is idle until Feb. 10 when it takes part in the Highlander Invitational hosted by Houghton College.
