Wildcat Men Place Sixth at ECC Indoor Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Daemen College men's track and field team finished sixth place, out of eight competing teams, at the East Coast Conference Championship meet held tonight at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.  Daemen accumulated 42 team points.  St. Thomas Aquinas amassed 169 points to secure the ECC title.

Daemen saw a couple of new records and second-place finishes fall in the 500-meter dash and weight throw at today's competition.  Rookie Alonzo Rodriguez-Spencer (Buffalo, N.Y.) made his first appearance in an ECC Championship meet, finishing second in the 500-meter.  The freshman standout eclipsed his own benchmark of 1:07.76, crossing the finish line in a record-breaking time of 1:06.45 to finish second and give the Wildcats eight points.  Veteran star Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y.) also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 13.80 meters, collecting eight points for the Wildcats.  Also, Laird set a new school record in the weight throw with a heave of 12.54 meters (6th place), besting his previous mark of 12.50 meters which he established in January 2016.

Daemen's distance medley team of Mike Swiniarski (Akron, N.Y.), Louk, Justin Petrocy (Elma, N.Y.) and Timothy Poole (Fayetteville, N.Y.) placed fourth, earning Daemen 4 points, with a school record-breaking time of 10:50,87.

Lucas Canales (Ithaca, N.Y,), Rodney Corbin (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Nathan Louk (Jane Lew) added top-five finishes on the track today.  In the 5,000-meter, Canales placed third out of 12 participants with a time of 15:32.87 (6 points).  Additionally, he added a seventh-place showing in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:12.59.  Corbin matched his school benchmark in the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 7.01 seconds, good for the fourth place finish.  Louk, in his first season on the track, placed fifth in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:41.96 (2 points).

Josh Bodnar (Fillmore, N.Y.) and Tyler Compo (Lancaster, N.Y.) rounded out the Daemen scorers on the track.  Bodnar, a long distance star, ran a 4:48.36 in the mile to finish seventh overall.  In the 500-meter Compo just missed the scoring position, crossing the finish line in 1:08.35 to place seventh.

Other top performers from the field events include sophomore thrower Sullivan Keller (Alden, N.Y.) and senior jump specialist Shaquille Corrica (New York City, N.Y,).  Keller placed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 12.71m and followed it up with a seventh-place finish in the weight throw (12.39m).   Corrica, a pivotal contributor to the Daemen men's soccer team, placed 7th in his first ECC Championship appearance in the long jump (3.4 meters).

Daemen resumes its 2018 schedule when the outdoor portion of the schedule gets underway with the Geneseo Early Spring Invitational on Saturday, March 31
