Wildcat Men Finish Fourth At ECC Outdoor Championships

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – The Daemen College men's track and field team posted a fourth-place showing at the East Coast Conference Track and Field Championships held this afternoon at Williamsville South High School just three miles down the road from Daemen.  Today's meet marked the first-ever track meet hosted by Daemen since the inception of the program in 2011.  St. Thomas Aquinas College claimed their second-straight team championship with 213 points.  The Wildcats accumulated 75 points in their performance today.

Junior long distance specialist Lucas Canales (Ithaca, N.Y.), and the dynamic throwing duo of Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y.) and Sullivan Keller (Alden, N.Y.) each posted a second-place finish in their respective events for the Wildcats.

On the track, Canales finished second out of 14 runners in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 34:19.43, earning the Wildcats eight points.

In field events, Laird and Keller combined for 30 of Daemen's 75 total points.  Laird finished second in the shot put with a heave of 12.67 meters while placing third in the javelin (47.61 meters) and fifth in the high jump (1.63 meters).  Keller earned second place in the javelin with a toss of 47.93 meters and finished third in the shot put (12.31 meters).

Senior Shaquille Corrica (New York City, N.Y.) had a record-smashing performance for the second-straight week.  In the triple jump, Corrica finished fourth with a jump of 12.70 meters.  He bettered his school benchmark of 12.69 meters which he set at last weekend's competition.  The dual-athlete added fourth-place finishes in the high jump and long jump, leaping 1.68m and 6.54 meters respectively.

Additional highlights of the track included a third-place showing by freshman Rodney Corbin (Williamsville, N.Y.) in the 100-meter dash (11.30 seconds), a fifth-place finish by rookie Alonzo Rodriguez-Spencer (Buffalo, N.Y.) in the highly competitive 400-meter dash (51.18 seconds), and a six-place effort in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:48.48) by sophomore long-distance specialist Josh Bodnar (Fillmore, N.Y.).

In field events, junior Andrew Strobele (Akron, N.Y.) and sprinting sensation Rodney Corbin each placed fifth in their individual events.  Strobele placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 29.70 meters, and Corbin jumped 6.52 meters in the long jump to place fifth.

Daemen's relay teams also fared well.  The 4x100 team of Corbin, Corrica, Rodriguez-Spencer, and Justin Petrocy (Elma, N.Y.) placed third with a time of 43.70 seconds, just two-tenths of a second off their own school record.  The 4x400 team of Rodriguez-Spencer, Jonny Schmidt (Clarence Center, N.Y.), Nate Louk (Jane Lew, W.Va.), and Andrew Greenaway (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished fourth with a time of 3:42.56.

Up next, The Wildcats have a short turnaround as they gear up for the Alfred State Invitation this Monday, April 23rd.  Daemen will make the short trek to Alfred, N.Y. for the 4:00 p.m. start time.
